Fantasy steeped in myth, consequence, and forbidden wonder

MANRED

The cycle

The Matter of Manred.

One cosmology. Many peoples. Thousands of years of history. Countless stories.

The Matter of Manred is an interconnected cycle of fantasy set within a shared cosmology shaped by the collision of peoples, religions, cultures, histories, and competing understandings of existence itself. Kings and merchants, priests and sorcerers, warriors and thieves inhabit different places and moments within that larger reality. Some command kingdoms. Others are simply trying to survive them. Their stories may unfold years or generations apart, but choices have consequences, histories accumulate, and events that appear distant from one another are often connected in ways their participants cannot see.

Inside the Matter

A Cosmology with History

The Matter does not begin when a story does. Its histories stretch across thousands of years. Peoples migrate, kingdoms rise and collapse, religions divide and transform, and civilizations inherit consequences whose origins may lie centuries or millennia in the past. Myths preserve memories of earlier ages, sometimes imperfectly, while ancient events continue to shape the lives of people who may know little or nothing about them. History in the Matter of Manred is not background. It is one of the forces acting upon the present.

Peoples, Kingdoms, and Cultures

The Matter of Manred is inhabited by peoples with distinct histories, languages, religions, political traditions, economies, and ways of understanding themselves and one another. Kingdoms and cities are shaped by migration, conquest, trade, alliance, intermarriage, rivalry, and cultural exchange. No single people or kingdom defines the Matter, and no culture possesses a privileged understanding of its history or cosmology.

Magic, Religion, and Metaphysics

Magic exists alongside religion, philosophy, politics, and ordinary life, but these are not interchangeable ways of describing the same thing. Conjurors, witches, necromancers, priests, philosophers, and others approach existence from different traditions and with very different assumptions about what is possible, permissible, or true. Questions of power therefore extend beyond who possesses a sword, a crown, or an army. Knowledge matters. Faith matters. Reputation matters. Money matters. And sometimes the dead matter more than anyone would prefer.

Stories Within Stories

There is no single hero of the Matter of Manred. Characters who occupy the center of one story may appear at the edges of another. A political decision in one kingdom may become a merchant’s problem hundreds of miles away. A minor character may return years later carrying an entirely different story. Each work is designed to stand on its own while contributing another perspective to the larger cosmos.
